Inter Cooler, After cooler & Charge air cooler

Compressor Inter Cooler & After Cooler

Compressor intercooler

There is some confusion in terminology between aftercooler, intercooler, and charge-air cooler.

The inter prefix in the device name originates from historic compressor designs. In the past, aircraft engines were built with charge Air Coolers that were installed between multiple stages of supercharging, thus the designation of inter.

Likewise, the “after” prefix (as in Aftercooler), refers to cooler placed at the end of supercharging chain.

While multi-stage turbocharger systems are still in use today, the terms intercooler and aftercooler are most often used synonymously, even in single stage cooling devices where a single cooler sits between the turbo and the engine.

Thus, since an intercooler or aftercooler commonly cools charged air, they are both sometimes referred to as a Charge Air Coolers.

We can provide just the inter cooler element OR the entire unit including the outer casing. Series production for OM requirements is already carried out for leading compressor makers, but we are also able to design and build for bespoke special projects.

Charge Air Coolers

Charge Air Coolers

For more than six decades Vestas aircoil a/s has been one of the world’s leading specialists in the development, technology and manufacturing of charge air coolers for stationary and mobile onshore/offshore applications for engine outputs above 200 kW.

A selection of cooler types is shown here and below.

When cooled, the moisture in the air can condense into water droplets. This water would negatively affect the engine performance by entering the cylinders. Where called for, Vestas aircoil provides water mist catchers or water separators customized for each charge air cooler.

For low-speed two-stroke marine engines, the Exhaust Gas recovery (EGR) system is a major technology to help meet Tier III emission standards.

Compact charge air coolers

Metalindo produces its charge air coolers using a range of fin geometries.

There are details here of our Ultra Compact, Standard & Premium Tin Coated geometries. Minimum space, maximum performance.

Extremely efficient & compact so that it is perfect for use with 4-stroke high performance engines.

10mm diameter tubes combined with an infinite range of fin pitches make bespoke design for each cooling requirement easily achievable. There is a range of surface options from low pressure drop plain finish to heavily corrugated surfaces designed to produce powerful turbulence and thus improve heat transfer.

Compact coolers can be manufactured from a number of material, also combined with coatings where required.
